Job Summary

Senior Engineer Manager -  Callisto

ABOUT THE TEAM

Data protection needs for large enterprises are evolving into a varied usage of private/public cloud. While Rubrik has built incredibly successful solutions for both, our technical architecture needs to constantly evolve to fit our customer's needs, working seamlessly across public/private cloud. To provide the same magical experience to our customers while maintaining the agility of a startup, we need to converge our solutions to a foundation that can be extended & re-used. This requires a rethink across many areas of product and stack.

The Callisto team is chartered to drive this initiative. A part of the Rubrik Product Infrastructure organization, the team spans the Palo Alto, CA (US) and Bengaluru (IN) locations but operates as a single entity. It’s core product is a distributed noSQL database with a surround ecosystem of ancillary components (db drivers, proxy, et al) providing services to the Rubrik stack.

This distributed database is at the heart of the Rubrik architecture, hosting all metadata needed by individual Rubrik services. Being at the bottom of the stack, this layer (and the team) not only needs to provide guidance for all software layers above it (e.g. file system, reporting, UI, etc.) but also to continually evolve to enable new platforms and use cases and stretch the limits of availability, scale and performance.

Some recent projects that the team is working on

  • Metadata support for Rolling Upgrades - Provide a framework to enable seamless metadata upgrades in a rolling fashion. Patent filed.
  • Fast Metadata Sync - A next-gen sync of metadata from on-prem Rubrik clusters to the cloud with latencies in the single-digit seconds range.
  • Reserve Mode - Ensure optimal performance and stability of the database in the face of infrastructure challenges.

The team has a strong roadmap and additionally, has a bias towards open sourcing appropriate database-centric projects that can benefit the industry. An example of this contribution is Kronos - a scalable, low-latency distributed time synchronization service.

These projects require a deep understanding of distributed systems and databases, core OS, and storage fundamentals. As a company, we follow the tenet of measuring what you build and performance and cost at scale plays a key role.

This role offers a dynamic blend of visionary thinking and hands-on execution, tackling complex technical challenges with the potential to have a significant impact on Rubrik’s trajectory, and the industry. If all this sounds interesting, please reach out.
